The times have been a little crazy lately. And between the millions of people unemployed and social distancing, even the most mundane things can be forgotten. So, applying for different grants to cover your college tuition might not have been the most pressing thing on your mind.

But, lucky for you, you still have time to apply for the FAFSA and lower your out-of-pocket expenses for school!

What Is The FAFSA?

The FAFSA (short for Free Application For Federal Student Aid) is not a scholarship, but rather an educational grant from the government. Individuals who meet the requirements can use this money for their college tuition, books, school supplies, and other college-related expenses.

Who Qualifies For Financial Aid?

Although the ultimate determinant of whether a student qualifies for the grant is their financial need, students must first be either a U.S. citizen or eligible international student to apply.

To learn more about the requirements, you can visit their website here.

Before you fill out the application make sure that you have the following things:

  • Your SSN (or alien registration number)
  • Last Year’s Tax Return
  • Last Year’s W-2
  • Your Signature (or e-signature)

However, if you are a dependent you’ll need to make sure that you have your parent’s SSN, tax returns, and signature.

When Is The FAFSA Deadline?

The FAFSA usually becomes available every fall in October, allowing students to get a head start on tackling their college tuition for the upcoming year. The last day to submit applications in for the school year is June 30th of every year.

So, there’s still time to complete the application! I encourage you to go ahead and fill out the FAFSA…even if you think that you will not get anything. Because you never know whether you will qualify or not if you don’t apply.
