I think that we all know how intense and expensive decorating for the holidays can be. Especially the ultimate, decoration-laden holiday Christmas (where passionate Christmas enthusiasts can spend hundreds of dollars on lights, trees, and other decorations). But for us budget-friendly people who want to create a holiday atmosphere, this can sometimes be hard to achieve. However, I have some ideas on how you can decorate for Christmas on a budget.
Tip 1: Go to Dollar Tree
If you’re looking for some inexpensive Christmas decorations for your place, you might try heading to Dollar Tree. This national store chain offers just what its name states, products for only ONE dollar. (Important Update: The minimum cost of Dollar Tree products is now $1.25).
And they have plenty of beautiful decorations that you can use for your place. Wreaths, ornaments, stockings, and even mini Christmas trees. So, if you want to add some holiday spirit to your place without breaking the bank, or need to decorate a small apartment without overcrowding it, this might be the spot for you!
And, if you’re very creative and like DIY projects, you can take your Christmas products to the next level. Some great projects are:
Snow Covered Mason Jars
Wine Glass Holiday Dioramas
Framed Ornament Wreath
Tip 2: Make Your Own Decorations
You don’t need to have all store-bought materials when you are decorating for Christmas. There are many cute and affordable Christmas decorations that you can make on your own. Here’s a list of some decorations that you can DIY below:
- Popcorn Garlands
- Ornaments
- Wreaths
- Stockings
- Christmas Jars
- Christmas Signs
Tip 3: Catch Christmas Items On Sale
Most people might spend most of their money on gifts during Black Friday week. But the best time to get Christmas stuff is actually right after the holidays have ended. You’ll be able to get decorations, gift sets, and other Christmas themed items at just a fraction of the cost. So make sure to visit your stores after Christmas to see what they have to offer!

Tip 4: Borrow Christmas Decorations
Initially, I was having a little trouble when I first started to think about different ways to cut down on the price of decorations. But eventually, I had a good idea. If you can borrow items for something as big as a wedding, surely you can do the same for Christmas decorations.
Just think of a good friend or family member that always has their decorating game on point (maybe you have an event planner friend or an aunt that has a million decorations). Most likely, they’ll have extra Christmas decorations that they won’t be using or that they will not put up because it doesn’t go with their theme that year. So, you can ask them if you can borrow some decorations for the holidays.
Or, better yet, ask if you can rent some of their decorations for a fee. This will ensure that you will not only decorate your place for an affordable price, but you’ll also be helping your loved one(s) save up for Christmas too!

Tip 5: Buy Holiday Decorations Second-Hand
You can also save money on holiday decorations by buying them second-hand. One way that you might be able to see a variety of Christmas decor is by looking what others have to offer online. You might find holiday decorations that you like on websites such as Craigslist and Facebook Market. You can also visit garage sales earlier in the year to see if you can find decorations then.
Also, don’t forget to check out your local thrift stores! They aren’t just for finding great deals on clothes. You might find great holiday decor there too (like yard decorations) or you might even be able to find a Christmas tree!
Hopefully you enjoyed learning how to decorate on a budget for the holidays!
Merry Christmas and happy decorating!
